I don’t know if it’s a common misconception, but for long time, I thought a prostitute and slut were words with the same meaning. Apparently, they’re not. Turns out, prostitution is a profession whileslut is a word that's more ambiguous.
Here’s how the Oxford Dictionary defines a prostitute:

The term slut is however, more confusing. And used more liberally. Here are a few definitions.

The only thing that’s certain from these definitions is this: SLUT is a very derogatory term.
And let’s not blame the men. More often than not, SLUT is a term used by women to define other women.
I still don’t understand the word, but from what I gather, these are the things that would brand any woman a SLUT:
1. Being sexually active before marriage

2. Dressing 'provocatively'
3. Living with a guy
4. Being a lesbian/bisexual
5. Being a divorcee
6. Having a one-night stand

7. Being in an open/no-strings-attached relationship

8. Having a long history of relationships

9. Laughing at dirty jokes

10. Having more guy friends than girl friends

11. Coming home late

12. Partying

13. Having tattoos/piercings

14. Swearing, or even knowing swear words

15. Living alone with guys friends coming over

16. Drinking and smoking

17. Wearing make up, especially red lipstick

18. Being flirtatious

19. Watching porn

20. Into a 'promiscuous' profession
